Cam Lang, the local owner and operator of the new Carpet Superstores location in Calgary, and I have been working long hours since early December 2011 to make sure the first-ever location for Carpet Superstores in Calgary is as successful as possible.

I just got off the phone with Michelle in the advertising department of the Calgary Herald. When I hung up a strange feeling hit me – it was a good feeling. So how does feeling “good” feel “strange?” The simple fact that I didn’t start or end the conversation with my back up against the wall while I was talking to someone who I would have, three years ago, called a “salesperson” made me think – my attitudes in marketing have changed.

There are just over 100 articles in this blog, about 50 of them have some form of verbal bashing of advertising salespeople. Just like my previous retraction of bashing TV and Radio, I’m understanding the importance of good relationships with all business service providers.

Calgary Education Scam, Paying to Learn SEO at a School

This blog article is in response to a Twitter user who asked me to elaborate on this tweet, “#Calgary SEO Classes scam. Only the first 10 google results count. U r going to pay $600 to compete against $60K #wasteofmoney

Basically, the problem (the scam) is a strategic one. Imagine a class of eleven students learning how to optimize their website (SEO / Search Engine Optimization) to appear on the first page of Google for some specified search term or phrase.

Now understand that in SEO we are only concerned with appearing on the first page of Google for any desired search term and, the preference is to be first, second, or third. Each successive lower ranking on Google equals fewer website visits (except for the ninth and tenth spot where the tenth spot gets more visits than the ninth spot).

With this we know there are only ten spots up for grabs. What happens when eleven people want to rank for the same search terms? Well, one of them loses. Considering that there are about 10 people in Calgary who are good at SEO and maybe 200 people in Canada who really know how to get something ranked well then, schools are taking students money knowing that for some of those students it won’t matter how much they learn in the class, they are a Gold Fish in a world of sharks.

 

David Howse Marketing Ltd.  ranks websites on about 1000 search terms (across all website for all clients). There is no way in hell that some kid paying $600 will (1) know more about SEO that I will – especially since I know more that his/her instructor and (2) I invest about $20,000 a year in assets that help my SEO projects.

This strategic dilemma is different than teaching say, marketing. Entering a red ocean (being a recent graduate with a marketing degree) is not as harsh as being educated in something that is not only a red ocean but also  limited to only ten spots.

This is why I would never endorse students paying to learn SEO.

Importing from China to Canada – it’s a lot more than a shipper and a customs broker

Two days ago I returned from China. I was in Guangzhou from October 17 to November 7, 2011. Everyday of that trip was about building friendship in China, learning the language and culture, and making manufacturing agreements.

The best tip I can give anyone for success in doing business in China is to learn the culture and the language.  The most important things you need to know have nothing to do with business. Sitting in a restaurant in Guangdong province is an experience unique to other parts of China. Guangdong Province has over 100,000,000 people; it has its own culture and history (though strongly tied to the rest of China). Knowing the rituals and the language will gain you respect. By demonstrating that you actually care or maybe even love China many doors will open for you.

If you don’t have time for this then you need to hire a guy like me. I’ll bet that almost every China-USA or China-Canada trade problem or bad business negotiation came from either poor communication or cross-cultural mixups. Another thing you need to learn is to stop speaking so quickly, and not only that but reflect on your words before you speak. Trust me, even that will help.

David Howse Marketing Scam

Well it took three years and 3 months but someone finally googled the search -> David Howse Marketing Scam. In case anyone thinks I am involved in a scam please call the Better Business Bureau (but not the Toronto Better Business Bureau because they were shut down for running scams ;-) or the RCMP. But before you do that, why not call me first. My cell number is 4o3-99I-8863.

Here’s what I think caused this individuals (the googler) reaction:

I had just read a few pages of Outrageous Advertising by Bill Glazer and came up with the idea to write a fax sales letter that had a pretty good story. This letter turned out to be the best fax sales letter I had ever written!

Hi (merge field first name) I’m not near my computer but luckily they have a fax machine I can use.

I was out with Karen last night (she loves sushi) anyway, I had a conversation with some guy who seriously took charge of his marketing – he was really pumped with how awesome the results have been.

He gave me the company’s contact info – they are in Calgary (and I’m there this weekend for other business so I called them up). It’s David Howse Marketing, 1-888-736-3229.

The guy that gave me the # asked I not give it to anyone else – he had more sake in him than salmon – his loss!
I’m just leaving a meeting with David now. The deal is you get

The cause of the problem was a lady named Karen tried to read the fax but she has, as I found out, a literacy problem. She thought that fax was saying she loves to drink sake! When she phoned and asked why I was making such a claim, well, I couldn’t do much but to laugh a little and explain the fax to her.

I guess after being responsible for millions of print, fax, radio, tv, Facebook, Google, Bing, Yahoo, YouTube, Newspaper, flyer, …. ads there’s bound to be one person to get upset. c’est la vie.

I was amazed with the amount of traffic Whoopupdays.Com received in the past 30 days – 3,523 visits to be exact. Below is the visual of the Google Analytics visitors map and below is a listing of the origin of every visit.

What is amazing is the data that came over the past month. 3,523 website visits makes a pretty accurate sample of where are the people who are interested in Whoop Up Days. Trending the change (over time) of the number of website visits and the location of those visits is some pretty powerful marketing information.

The Zen of Sales – Setting Goals. Neuro Linguistic Programming to get What You Want in Sales, Marketing, Business, and Life

The Goal is Not the Goal and What Really is a Sale?

I wrote this to help my sales staff. Feel free to use and modify it for your sales team (but please do not republish it on the web or offer it for sale).

When I was growing up I was taught to have goals. If it was academics then it was about what marks I wanted to finish the year with. If it was sports it was about “you gotta want it.”

Several years ago, when I was reading Tony Robbins’ Unlimited Power, I learned that the goal is not the goal. The goal, what we tell ourselves we want, is just a mental cue that, if it connects to our values, if we repeat it in enough ways (writing it down, repeating it to ourselves, visualizing it), the goal becomes a part of our neurological makeup.

The unfortunate thing about goals is that they are victims of a human survival mechanism – the conservation of energy.

If we set a goal of winning 20 out of 30 basketball games, we will only win 19 or fewer. If we want to make $1,000,000 then we will make something less. If we want 100 sales, again, we will close fewer than 100.

Even though we are telling our brains we want 100 sales, our brain sets up the neuro pathways while factoring conservation of energy. The brain says, well if 100 sales is good, then I’m sure we’ll be happy with 90. And we get 90 sales.


This is one of the services we provide. The people we are selling to are also potential customers for other services so having a sales team aware that a “no” on Product-A may mean a “yes” on Product-B.

Tony’s tip for this was to set a goal well beyond what we want. If we calculate we want 100 sales then we should tell ourselves we want 200 sales – AND BELEIVE IT! Repeat it, write it, visualize it, and tell it to the world!

Now we have a goal – what next?

What is a Sale?

There are two kinds of thinking with a huge gray area in-between. There’s short term thinking and there’s long term thinking.

Short term thinking is about – sell now! Long term thinking is about building a relationship to sell more.

Which is better? Well, you need both. Without short term selling you can’t feed yourself to realize long-term selling.

So if we close a deal today great! If not, we must ask ourselves, out of my work today with whom did I speak that would appreciate my call in a few weeks or months. Who is the best out of the bunch that makes me act – I should have a look at his or her website and offer a different proposal.
It is also likely that the offer you made today was turned down only because of timing. If you make a call to the same person sometime in the future the deal will close (the long term thinking sale).

What’s going on in the conversation to allow such subtle navigation of accepting a “no” today for a “yes” later? It’s all about your sales skills. It’s about the conversation and your awareness of the conversation. In the Zen of sales, you are both the seller and the observer of the sale. Your mind is providing you feedback that is only possible by being relaxed yet energized. When you are engaging someone in a conversation you are picking up all verbal and nonverbal cues. You are navigating your sales pitch (the script) and adding to it. While you do this you are setting up your prospect to either say yes today or yes tomorrow. You can do this because you know your product, you believe in your product, you know your prospect, and you know the product can help them.

Remember, the Zen of Sales is not like the Zen of Relaxation; in the Zen of Sales there is a sword in your hand, a tempered steel blade that cuts through everything it meets. This sword is you.

Reaching goals is not a measure of our character; it is only a measure of how often and how well we tell ourselves we want something.

Lethbridge United Way 2011 2012 Fundraising Video, Website and Blog. Lethbridge Video Production

Starting in May of 2010 I began work with the United Way of Lethbridge and South Western Alberta. The project was to:

  1. Create a website
  2. Create a blog
  3. Train staff to update the website
  4. Train staff to add blog articles
  5. Create a 3 minute video

Today, that project was finally completed. The last component, the video, began in February of 2011 with planning meetings and ended with its delivery and YouTube upload.

The website was the first piece I created and that was finished around September 2010; though, I still assist with major changes and technical issues.

So far feedback has been really great on all three components. Working with the United Way was a lot of fun and because it was for a good cause, the hard work really didn’t seem that hard at all.

The most rewarding part of this project was meeting all of the local charities that the United Way supports. Shooting the horses and the clients at the Lethbridge Theraputic Riding Association. The opening shot of the video was pure luck. If you play the start again you see the camera zoomed in to the eye of the horce. As the camera pulls back the horse starts walking. That really wasn’t planned but those horses made shooting easy, they were so well mannered.

Make sure the language you use in your blog is the same language your readers use. The Google keyword tool can help you with this. Any why did I choose the above image? This image will easily attract more readers than say, a bar graph.

I published my first article in this blog December of 2008. In that time I’ve published 91 articles and attracted 18,141 visitors. Considering the topics I write on, I’m pretty happy with that number.

Writing good content and attracting readers are the primary goals of a blog writer (though the ultimate goal as with anything may be related to money). After you write your article have you ever wondered how people find it? Well obviously search engines, Tweeting the address, adding links to other websites help but, what exactly are people typing in to the search engines to find your article?

I’ve posted a near complete search term list for my blog from the first article to June 5, 2011. What really amazes me is that if you Google, Best Business Movies, this article is ranked #2. That term, Best Business Movies, is searched 1000 times a month (according to Google). Knowing what topics are relevant to people and what terms they use to find those topics is very important for Blogging. The next time you write an article, think like the reader. Make the article search engine friendly by using the language of your audience. So basically, read up a little on Search Engine Optimization and apply it to your blog.

After my experiences at the 109th Canton Fair in Guangzhou, China I saw a market for a full service Canada China Business Guide.

On one occasion, in China, I was sitting in a KFC negotiating with a manufacturer from the Philippines. As we were working through three possible scenarios of the agreement I noticed a gentleman eavesdropping on the conversation. The next day I ran in to that man, an Australian, who after apologizing for listening in, began to ask me a series of questions related to negotiations.

Also, throughout the Canton Fair, I saw a lot of Westerners being escorted by Chinese translators. These translators had no business qualifications but they acted as the number one resource to some of the buyers.

With this knowledge, I put together a small team – myself and an experienced China product sourcing partner (who speaks excellent English, and who can actually get a better price that I can) to help Canadian business owners connect with Chinese manufacturers.

Bill Borger Mt. Everest Summit and Calgary News Media

Bill Borger Mount Everest/Calgary HandiBus Fundraiser and Calgary TV, Radio, and Newspapers

If you are a regular reader of my blog [which is dedicated to Alberta marketing topics] you’ll quickly note that I had a negative bias toward Radio, Newspapers, and TV advertising. Note, ” I had.” Until January of this year, my interaction with traditional media outlets came from a competitive angle; that is, I was promoting my experiences in marketing as reasons to not spend your advertising money on traditional media. So, to some degree, I only worked on one side of the coin.

In December of 2010 I met Bill Borger Jr. At that time, Bill was preparing for an amazing adventure – to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Having already swum the English Channel (in 2001) Bill was soon to become the fifth person ever  and the first Canadian to have accomplished both feats. The video below is from May 9, 2011 as he worked his way towards Base Camp 1 of Mount Everest.

In connection with the Everest climb, Bill worked with the Calgary HandiBus and set out to use the climb as a means to raise money for that charity. As of May 11, 2011 Bill had raised over $375,000.

Now for the part that has changed my view of traditional news media. Along with the Calgary Herald, Global TV, CTV Calgary, 660Am and 960Am, and several other outlets dedicated much of their time to promoting Bill’s and the HandiBus’ efforts.

Thinking of traditional media as existing only to gain advertising revenue might be prudent if you are a shareholder or competitor but from a community point of view, a strong local media benefits the community it serves. Last week I visited a Naturopathic Doctor for the first time. I had friends and relatives who swore by them but, until last week, it was still all too foreign to me. After years of competitive sports, a high stress job (that I love), too many years in school which resulted in sporaticly poor eating habits, and an extreme A-type personality, my body is beginning to feel the abuse.

When I googled, Calgary Naturo [...and waited for Google to fill in the rest] I quickly learned that most people call them “calgary naturopathic doctor” but, I was happy with just searching “Calgary Naturopath.”

I visited each doctor’s website one by one. When I got to:

Congratulations to all you soon to be graduates! I’m sure some of you girls have started looking for prom dresses already, and if not don’t fret. I have found a great site with the widest selection of dresses. Just click Regina Dresses to see their 2011 collection.

Regina Dresses.com is full of amazing gowns and their main site  is full of designers including Cassandra Stone who designs baby doll dresses and ball gowns. The photo I posted is by  Mac Duggal who designs couture style dresses and offers a line exclusive for plus size girls. His dress designs are to die for!

There are so many dresses to choose from on this site you can spend hours with your girlfriends check out the pictures. What is really nice about this site is if your looking for something different or something classic you are sure to find it here.

One thing to mention,for those of you who may be having a hard time finding something a little more modest for prom yet still fashionable and up to date, this site offers plenty of dresses and designers to choose from.

If you are feeling a little behind in your wedding plans this site is perfect for you becasue they have everything. Not only do they have wedding dresses but they also offer a section for your bridesmaids as well. You can even check out shoes and accessories.

The site is all about catering to your needs so it’s really easy to find your way around.  And there are a whole range of sizes. I really appreciate that they have collections specifically for plus size brides and petites so you are sure to find your dress no matter what shape you are.

I spent the the afternoon checking through the list of designers they have and ladies if you havent found your dress yet you are in luck. So brides if you like the dress in the picture you may want to check out this site. Although the collection features a whole range of classic styles too.
If you click the previous link you will find  Mon Cheri Destinations is thier featured collection. It is a very modern and simple style. If you are looking for a sleeveless silk dress with a modified mermaid style definitely check out this line. It has a very informal but simply elegant look. I love that are numerous photos too! On the other hand if you are are a bride that is looking for a more classic white bridal dress you should check out their Mon Cheri Bridal collection.
