Lethbridge Global TV Advertising on the Internet Website

Advertising on the Internet, Lethbridge Global TV  Website

Several of my clients received the following email from Global TV Lethbridge. It is an offer to place banner ads or video clips (commercials) on their website. The email was as follows:

THE NUMBERS ARE IN !!!

Over the past weekend, Internet viewing on the Global Lethbridge website was phenomenal.

Over 38,000 persons  checked News videos on our website.

(it’s very likely that more than one person was watching at times, so that actual number would be much higher)

If you had placed an ad on our website, you could have had incredible exposure.

Did you know you could place your TV ad on our website for as low as $33 per 1000 viewers (7-second hits on pre-rolls to video)

Did you also know that when you purchase website advertising you can choose the exact region you want to advertise in – i.e. Southern Alberta only

(It’s called ‘GEOTARGETING’)

See the attached sheets

1.     All the properties that you can purchase from us.  (choose any or all)

2.    The rate card.  ALL properties are the same rate.  You ONLY pay for as many thousand ‘hits’ as you want.

E.g.  If you only want 10,000 hits, you pay 10 x $33 = $330 – Amazingly affordable!

Call us and we can explain how this works

It’s so easy,

Thnx

I’m not going to dispute whether 38,000 people visited the Global TV website and watched videos this past weekend. I’m sure when a CF 18 crashes in Lethbridge, a lot of people start talking.

What I would like to see is the weekly average of website traffic, not a statistic from a very unusual occurence. The fee of $33 per 1000 viewers may be reasonable depending on what you are looking for in advertising.

Here is a CPM comparison between Global TV Lethbridge rates and Facebook rates.

Global TV Lethbridge 1000 impressions for $33 (7 seconds of video. From what I can tell, allows a click-through to a website).

Facebook 1000 impressions for $0.15 (15 cents. Target by age, sex, city, interests. Allows a click-through to a website).

From this perspective, Global TV website advertising costs 220 times more than Facebook.

My recommendation

(1) Make sure your website has Google Analytics. Test Global TV Lethbridge advertising against Facebook advertising. This way you can see which form of advertising drives people to your website.

(2) Always ask your customers how they heard about you.

(3) Decide if paying $33 is better than paying 15 cents. Only you can figure this out.

  1. I was going to suggest the same thing. I would love to see Global’s actual stats for how many of the 38000 views came from southern alberta. An honest marketer would not hide that stat, and appears that they are trying to draw some sort of relationship between those views and advertising on their site, so they should have no problem divulging this number.

I watched about 4 different views of the airplane crash. 2 of Facebook, 2 on Youtube., none on global’s website.
