Why Lethbridge Advertising Sales People Suck at Marketing
The following was posted on my Facebook. Few people understand what marketing is. The following should paint a very clear picture.
If the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying “Circus Coming to the Fairground Saturday”, that’s advertising.
If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk it into town, that’s promotion.
If the elephant walks through the mayor’s flower bed, that’s publicity.
And if you get the mayor to laugh about it, that’s public relations.
If the town’s citizens go to the circus, you show them the many entertainment booths, explain how much fun they’ll have spending money at the booths, answer their questions and ultimately, they spend a lot
at the circus, that’s sales.
And, if you planned the whole thing, that’s Marketing!
If you are a Lethbridge business owner and want more than just some sales person telling you where you should spend your money then stop talking to advertising sales people. Radio, TV, Newspaper, Print, Magazine, or any other kind of sales person has a primary motive of commissions and keeping his or her job. The ultimate success of your business is secondary to the cut they get from your spending.
Advertising sales people are good at asking for your money but poor at explaining why you should spend your money – beyond the typical rhetoric “this is the best.”
